History - Villisca Axe Murder House - Villisca IA
According to legend from June 10, 1912, eight people were brutally murdered in their sleep at the hands of an axe wielding killer who has yet to be named. Their faces so badly disfigured that their identities were not immediately known. The house locked from the inside...the key missing. The mirrors and windows all covered and the BLOODY AXE leaning casually beside the downstairs bedroom door where the the Stillinger girls lay lifeless. The victims are JB and Sara Moore (husband and wife), their children Herman (11), Katherine (10), Boyd (7), and Paul (5), along with Lena Stillinger (12) and Ina Stillinger (8), friends of the Moore children who had so innocently stayed the night after Sunday church. Many have been accused and there has even been a confession, however, to date this crime is UNSOLVED.
Preliminary Investigation
Weather - Hot and humid, no breeze. The Investigation: The house was small, white, and quaint. Upon entering the house, Tim felt an uneasy anxiety that overwhelmed him. He is not sure if it was a spiritual encounter or just the history of the horrific murders that overcame him. Darwin gave us a tour of the home and explained the history of the murders and trial. While holding the pendulum he asked a few questions to the Moore family and Stillinger girls. The pendulum seemed to respond to his questions regarding Sara. After 30 minutes Darwin left and we proceeded with our investigation. We set up in the downstairs blue room with our equipment and began asking questions to the Stillinger girls. Our EMF meters triggered a few times and we recieved our first EVP at 9:40 pm. The sounds of the trains were quite loud and frequent. It began to cause an uneasy feeling to us as the night went on. Later in the night we went upstairs to the bedroom and attic to continue our investigation. After a couple hours, we proceeded to the barn for a break and listened to our voice recorders for possible evidence on the EVP recorders. We continued the investigation until around 4:00 am. We concluded our investigation and told the spirits that we'd return again.
Members on the Investigation: Kerry, Janice, Tim, Cody, and Tony (Guest Investigator)
Weather: Cool, calm, and no wind, but the weather turned to downpouring rain towards the early morning hours The Investigation: Upon entering the house, we set up equipment. A total of 6 EVP recorders and a camcorder with night vision were just a few of the pieces of equipment used. We again, investigated the "blue" room, the parlor (living room),the upstairs bedrooms, and the attic. We performed a question and answer session in the parlor. We also performed a question and answer session in the "blue room" (bedroom where Stillinger girls bodies were found). On this trip, we also brought some hard candies in an effort to get the children to communicate with us. We took a brief break leaving nobody in the house, but the equipment all running. Tony was outside taking pictures of the outside of the house. Kerry, Janice, Tim, and Cody were in the barn, which is about fifteen yards behind the house. Later in the evening during another break, Tim and Janice were in the barn and Kerry, Tony, and myself (Cody) heard a scream so we ran out to find out what was going on. Tim was visibly shaken and the color was drained from his face. Janice was speechless and also shaken. They played back the recording and it was the sound of a young sounding female screaming for her life. She is heard saying "Oh my God", "ow ow" and screaming. Every one of our recorders picked up this scream. When reviewing the footage on the camcorder, the sounds of the screams were happening as Tony's camera was flashing in the windows from the outside. There was nobody in the house, and nobody outside the house other than Tony, who heard nothing.
At this point, we realized that my camera was dead and needed new batteries. I went into the house alone to get batteries that were just inside the door. I felt quite panicked. I felt like someone was there, watching me. I hurried and got back out of the house. More than one time, my camera has been completely drained of all energy. I have had this happen with new batteries. The camera simply shuts off. Our camcorder has also simply shut off, even with full tape and full battery power.
We went back into the house and completed our investigation. There are many photos from this investigation that contain more of the colorful energies and a couple that are white energies with a haze around them. We can only suspect that they are the spirits of the Moore family and of the Stillinger girls. We left the home, again thanking them for their hospitality, and went home.
Members on the Investigation: Kerry, Janice, Tim, Cody, and Denise (Guest Investigator)
Weather: Freezing, snow, sleet, and ice. Snow continued through the entire night. The Investigation: Upon entering the house, we set up our EVP recorders, a night vision camcorder, EMF Meters, and dousing rods. We investigated the "blue" room, parlor (living room), upstairs bedrooms, and the attic. This night seemed to be quite active. This investigation began like the others with the normal question and answer sessions. We brought candy for the children and asked them to communicate with us. In the upstairs bedroom where Herman, Katherine, Boyd, and Paul were found murdered, Denise noticed a stench of manure that noone else could smell. One of the murder suspects worked in a slaughterhouse and could have smelled of manure. Denise did not have any prior knowledge of the suspects. At around 2:00 a.m. Tim was in the attic with an EMF meter. The meter was triggering and he called us up there. Janice, Denise, and I (Cody) went into the attic and were shocked to see a mist covering the floor about a foot deep. The meter was still triggering and at one point, I felt something touch my neck. The digital camera that Denise was using started to malfunction. She would turn it back on and it would shut off. This happened about five or six times. The mist stayed with us for about five minutes. During that time, we asked questions and the meter continued to trigger. The mist disappeared, the meter stopped triggering, and Denise's camera stopped malfunctioning. Was there a family member in the attic with us or was it the spirit of the murderer? We did capture several photos with the same colorful streaks of energy, as well as the mist in the attic.
At the end of the night, we again loaded our equipment and thanked the family and Stillinger girls for their hospitality and told them we would be back to see them again.
Members on the Investigation: Kerry, Janice, Tim and Cody
Weather: Cold, no precipitation The Investigation: On this investigation we brought an MP3 player with old piano music from the time. We had heard from Darwin that Sara enjoyed the piano and that previous investigators seemed to get activity when the piano was played but because none of us know how to play, the MP3 seemed to be the best option. During our breaks, we would play the music. Upon listening to our EVP recordings, a female voice can be heard humming to the music. Another EVP sounds like a chant or a verse from the Bible saying "so take me in". Tim and Janice were using parabolic microphones with headphones in hopes of hearing something that the naked ear could not. Twice during the investigation, they heard male voices. One of those instances we went outside to see if there was someone out there, and there were men walking around the outside of the house who had stopped to see the house on their way through town. The other time, there was noone found to be outside or near the property, so those voices have no explanation. At some point during a question and answer session, Janice can be heard asking "Ina are you here with us?". Just before this, we hear a female voice saying "help me".
On this investigation we had the thermal camera. We did not see anything with this on this trip. Again, we spent the night asking many questions and wishing for communication from the family, the Stillinger girls and even the murderer/murderers. We ended the evening and told them we'd be back to visit soon.
Members on the Investigation: Kerry, Janice, Tim, Cody, and Warren
Weather: It was 55 degrees with a waning moon and no breeze. The Investigation: We started our investigation with a group prayer and began a group question and answer session. Warren, Janice, and Cody were in the blue room and Tim and Kerry in the kitchen monitoring the thermal on the laptop. After about a half an hour of this, we all left the house for a break and began our one on one sessions when break was over. First in the house alone was Kerry. He chose to do the blue room and spent twenty minutes doing his own question and answer session. Next in was Janice and she chose to investigate the upstairs children's room. She read a book to the children and asked some questions. During her alone time, she heard a bang coming from the area by the stairs, and we caught this on our recordings and video. When her session was over Cody chose to be locked in the attic where it is believed that the murderer/murderers may have hid. After the flash light wouldn't work and Tim brought up a new one, the rest of the team left the house. She heard a rustling sound just on the other side of the attic door out in the hallway, but it stopped. Many questions were asked and she heard a scratching noise on the wall that lasted for about fifteen seconds. She used the two way radio and told the team what she heard and they walked around the outside of the house to see if there was a bird or animal on the roof of the house...there was not. She continued her investigation and again heard the same sound. Her time was up and Tim came in to do his one on one in the attic, hoping to hear the same thing that Cody had. He asked some questions and heard nothing. Warren was next, and he too chose the attic. During his question and answer time, he heard a bang and also the scratching noise. He is heard on the video saying that he heard the noise and the noise is audible on our recordings. We then began another group session in the blue room. Cody and Janice were in there and Kerry, Tim, and Warren watched the thermal on the laptop. The thermal did catch the image of a small person standing in the doorway of the blue room, but we aren't sure which of the children it may have been. Also the meters began to trigger when the trains would go by which led us to believe that we were getting more activity.
At the end of the night, we thanked the family. Upon reviewing our evidence, we found that we didn't receive any evp's other than the sounds captured during the one on one times.
Members on the Investigation: Kerry, Janice, Tim and Cody
Weather: Winter weather advisory, no wind, but 35 degrees outside. The Investigation: We got all of our equipment set up in the parlor and various other rooms of the house. We started with our whole group in the house. Cody, Tim, and Janice were in the blue room downstairs and Kerry was in the parlor. After a question and answer session, we decided to do our one on one portion of the night. Cody started in the kitchen. The rest of the group was out in the barn and she was alone in the house. She heard bangs and movement coming from behind her and after only about ten minutes, she left the house and returned with Tim. The two of them investigated the parlor and kitchen area further. Tim heard what sounded like someone sitting in his chair, though he was a few feet from it and it was clearly not him. This happened twice during the time they were in the house. Janice and Kerry came in and did their one on ones as well. A few times Kerry appeared to have heard something, but otherwise, the house was quiet. Later in the night, Cody and Janice went into the blue room. One of the meters began to malfunction, or so we thought. The lights were lighting up and even after the batteries were changed and all of the settings were changed, it continued to do this. After reviewing our evidence, we found that there was an evp captured during this time. Was the spirit in the room communicating with us through the meter?
After a long night, we packed up our things and said our goodbyes to the family.
According to the owners of this residence a farmer hung himself in the barn many decades ago. In the mid 1990's, there were reports of kitchen cabinet doors opening and closing for no reason. There were also two reports of a child apparition in an upstairs bedroom and in the family room.
Preliminary Investigation
Weather - Cold with no wind. The Investigation: Although the farmhouse has been unoccupied for several years, electricity is still present. After we set up our trifield meters and voice recorders, all power was removed at the main electrical panel. On this investigation we captured a male and female voice in the house. We walked around and conducted question and answer sessions on this trip for about an hour and a half. We concluded our investigation and told the spirits that we'd return again.
Members on the Investigation: Kerry, Tracy and Chris(Guest Investigators) Weather: Hot and humid The Investigation: Kerry, Tracy, and Chris did a question and answer session in the kitchen of the farmhouse. Upon listening to the evp recorders, we found evidence of a voice that seems to be a male saying "welcome me". They headed out to the barn and while in there, they heard footsteps that sounded like a boot walking on wood. The only wood in the barn is up top where equipment is stored. They heard this with their own ears and it was also audible on the evp evidence. They spent a considerable amount of time in the barn and then went back into the house. While Chris was upstairs in the walk in closet using a parabolic microphone, he heard what sounded like a child talking and children playing. During the time that they were at the house, Janice was trying to reach Kerry on his cell phone which was in his car. She said that many times she called and it sounded like someone answered the phone but there was nobody there. Kerry didn't notice until they left the house that he had many missed calls. We're not sure if a spirit was around the car, but the phone being answered and nobody being on the other end was definitely something out of the ordinary.
Members on the Investigation: Kerry, Jan, Tim, and Cody Weather: Chilly no breeze The Investigation: The time of the season for the investigations plays a big role in our ability to have evp's that are easy to listen to because the crickets are quite loud during the summer and we have flies and other bugs flying around which can effect the video intregrity with knowing if what you're seeing is an actual orb or a bug. We began this investigation in the kitchen of the house as a group. We had recently purchased a set of infrared cameras with sound and were eager to put them to good use and see how much of a benefit they would bring. Tim and Cody headed upstairs with one of the infrareds and the night vision camcorder. Cody sat in the hallway and asked questions while Tim set up in the first bedroom to the right and had the camcorder aimed on Cody. During this time Cody offered her hand to anyone who would touch it and in watching the video, we noticed many flying objects around Cody. They seemed to float upward and sideways. Because there were no bugs and dust settles in a downward motion, we felt that there was someone with her at that time, although they didn't take the invitation to touch her hand. We spent about twenty mintues upstairs and then we headed back to the kitchen for some group question and answer time. We took a break and left the house with the equipment still running. After listening to the evp evidence, we heard the sound of someone taking a breath. Little did we know that in future investigations, we would hear this same eerie breath over and over again. Members on the Investigation: Kerry, Jan, Tim, and Cody Weather: 55 degrees, new moon, 60% humidity, and 28.80 barometric pressure. The Investigation: On this investigation, we had some names from Ruth, a sensitive who follows our show. We were eager to use these names and the information she had provided us with to see if we could draw out the spirits. We began by asking questions in the kitchen. We asked for Norman to let us know if he was there with us, and in our evp evidence we later heard a male voice say "I try for her". We heard the meters triggering quite a big and continued to ask questions using the other names. George seemed to be an active name as well as Martha. At the beginning of the evening, Cody mentioned that she had a very uneasy feeling about being there this night. She isn't a sensitive but just felt really uncomfortable about the house, and apparently with good reason since we seemed to gather the most evidence from the location on this night. We did individual investigations again and started with Kerry. He investigated the kitchen of the house and seemed to have a lot of meter activity with using the name George. Upon reviewing our evidence, we found that there were no evp's caught during his time in the house. Tim went in next and used the dousing rods upstairs. He felt drawn to the second bedroom on the left at the top of the stairs and upon entering the room, the dousing rods crossed. He spent some time asking questions upstairs and headed to the baswement. While walking down the stairs to the living room, he got the sense that someone was behind him. He turned and looked with the camera, but saw nothing. He continued to the basement where he heard clicks and bangs that starteled him. He also heard the sound of running water twice while down there, but this house has no running water. At the end of his time in there, Cody came in for her one on one time. She started in the living room, but felt really uncomfortable and quickly moved to the kitchen. The EMF meter seemed to trigger a lot while she was asking questions of George and Martha. Later we would find that while she was in the house alone, many evp's were recorded. A female voice says "Me and Christ" and another says "joyful" at a later time and the word joyful is heard again even later. Janice came into the house and she and Cody asked some questions. They heard a bang from the living room area and moved into that room to see if they could get whoever had made the sound replicate it, but nothing happened. They went upstairs and asked questions. On their way back down the stairs, Cody felt like someone was behind her and jumped, obviously scared, but noticed nothing unusual behind her. Upon reviewing our evidence later we noted that when we were all out of the house, we again got the breathing sound that we had captured on the previous investigation. In the barn where Kerry had placed a recorder, we got a male voice that seems to say "You're gonna die". We're not sure who said it, but it was very eerie. We finished up and headed back to Omaha.
Members on the Investigation: Kerry, Jan, Tim, and Cody Weather: 60.4 degrees, full moon, 66% humidity, and 28.86 barometric pressure. Lightening and rain for a short length of time. The Investigation: We decided that this investigation would be done with one person handling the camera and one person being on camera so that we could give a better visual of the person investigating. We started with with Janice and Cody in the house with Janice manning the camera. We had decided to bring some cards to build a small card house in the hopes that we could invite the spirits to knock it down. Cody built the card house in the upstairs bedroom that is on the right. We also placed dice on the floor around the house with all of them having the same number facing up. We had placed a hunting camera in the room which detects motion and takes three consecutive pictures and turned it on after Janice and Cody left the room in hopes of catching someone moving the cards. Janice and Cody headed to the basement of the house and Cody saw something move across the window in the basement. Whatever it was completely blacked out the window, but then was gone. Cody asked many questions but didn't hear anything significant until some sounds came from the furnace that sounded like a tinny noise. Then it stopped and started again. We decided to check outside for rain, and found it was pouring. We then went into the living room of the house and asked questions in there. Tim and Kerry were next in the house and they asked some questions in the kitchen and used the thermal camera. They noted that there was quite a bit of activity on the thermal and that the meter in the kitchen was quite active. Tim left the house and Kerry was in there alone monitoring the thermal and meter and asking questions. Tim went back in the house after about fifteen minutes and they asked questions together again. At one point, Tim went upstairs to the room where the card house was and the hunting camera snapped three pictures. In two of them, there are orbs around Tim, but in the third one, nothing. Was someone in the room with him? He did note that the cards remained unmoved and the dice were still in the same position. The rain had stopped by this time and all was quiet. Janice and Cody came back in and the thermal was moved to the living room at the base of the stairs. There seemed to be a cold spot on the stairs that was picked up by the thermal. Was there someone on the stairs? We are not sure, but the thermal was definitely picking something up. We finished our investigation, said our closing prayer and headed home. We left the house of cards in the house when we left knowing that we would return and hoping that they would be moved.
Members on the Investigation: Kerry, Janice, Cody and Nate (Guest Investigator) Weather: Cool and breezy The Investigation: We started in the small shed getting to know each other a little better since Nate was new to our investigation. We talked about procedures and protocols we use and he told us about himself. He began to feel uneasy, and said he felt like there was sadness around this area and he could "see" a noose and a man hanging. We went into the house and took Nate on a tour. He got some feelings in one of the bedrooms upstairs. We investigated the whole house, including the basement where Nate felt like someone had been locked in the cellar. We did get some evp evidence which is under the evp tab on this site. At one point, Cody felt like someone or something was holding her back at the top of the stairs exiting the basement, but there's nothing visibly there. Otherwise, nothing really out of the normal happened here this night that we could see or hear with our own ears, but Nate did feel a couple of cold spots. It was chilly, but we're not sure if that contributed to what he was feeling or not.
Members on the Investigation: Kerry, Tim, Janice, and Cody Weather: Some lightening and patchy rain. Cool and breezy. Turns to fog by early morning hours. The Investigation: Started out like any other normal investigation. We spent quite a bit of time in the kitchen and basement. In the kitchen, we had some variations on the thermal camera that we couldn't explain. We also used a couple of new "tricks" including an electrical ball and some candles. We got some variations on the thermal and the meters seemed to be very active. At about 2:00 am, Janice left and headed back to Omaha. This left Tim, Kerry, and Cody to complete the investigation. They sat with Kerry in the doorway that leads into the kitchen from the office area and Tim and Cody sat in the office area near the door that goes into the living room. Tim and I heard a loud bang. At first, we thought it was a car door and that Janice had come back, but then we heard a second one and it actually shook the floor. This was caught on our evp recorder and on the camcorder as well. There was nobody outside. Kerry and Tim thought they heard a woman's voice so we went upstairs. We heard a voice and a tinny sound from down stairs and went back down there. Nothing. The night was spent "chasing" someone throughout the house. Someone wanted us to know of their presence, but didn't make themselves visible to us. We'll see what the next visit brings.
Members on the Investigation: Kerry, Tim and Cody Weather- Cold; Mid to lower 30's with a slight breeze The investigation started like the others with the equipment being set up and this time we brought portable heaters. These served two purposes, they kept us warm and they served as an excellent light that helped the cameras. We conducted our prayer and began in the kitchen as a group. Kerry and Tim heard sounds coming from the office/living room area. Kerry moved his chair into the office to be closer to the sounds. Again, the meters were continually triggering in both the office and the kitchen. We had both of them set to magnetic so that we knew we weren't setting them off. We moved to the living room and Kerry stayed in the office. We performed more question and answer sessions and heard something from upstairs. Kerry moved his chair to the landing upstairs to see if he could hear it still. Tim and Cody stayed in the living room with the equipment. All of a sudden, Tim and Cody started hearing some loud banging noises. We asked if Kerry could hear them and if they were coming from upstairs, he said he could hear them, but that they weren't from up there. The banging subsided. Again, the banging started and an eerie scraping sound began to coincide with it. The sounds continued as Tim crept toward the kitchen to find what was causing the sound. Kerry then came down the stairs and followed Tim. The whole time, the sound continued. It was very loud and Kerry could hear it from the other floor. Tim found that it was coming from the basement but the minute he opened the basement door, it stopped. Upon looking around in the basement, we could find no evidence of any animal or movement that would cause the sound. We looked around outside the house, and found nothing. Tim ended up being the lucky one to sit in the basement alone. He is seen on the video sitting quietly in the dark. You can hear various ticks and bangs from all around him. You can see him pointing in the direction that the sounds are coming from. The EMF meter continued to sound almost continuously the whole time Tim is in the basement. Again, no explanation for the sounds. The investigation was ended in the kitchen and we packed up and went home, but not before stopping for pancakes, which is becoming a tradition after a long night of talking with the spirits. Is Wakefield haunted? While nobody can be sure, we are bound and detemined to find out.
Members on the Investigaion: Kerry, Tim, Cody and Chauncey (Guest Investigator) Weather- Cold; Mid to upper 40's with a slight breeze and fog Arrived at the residence to find it just as we had left it not long ago. Got our equipment set up and began with a group investigation in the kitchen. As always, we heard various noises in the house that seemed to be in the next room over. Tried to do some question and answer in the kitchen with Cody sitting over in the doorway by the entrance of the home. We have gotten some strange thermal readings from this area in the past, so were hoping for more of the same. Not long after we got started, there were spots that showed up as significantly cooler over Cody's right shoulder. She could also feel the temperature change. While sitting in the doorway, Cody asked if someone was walking through the doorway and when we replayed the evp's back later, we found that there was a male saying "no". This evp in our evp section. You will also hear an evp of a male voice who apparently knows her name and he says it "coooddddyyyyy". The group moves throughout the house doing question and answer sessions and at one point, heard noises coming from upstairs, but couldn't figure out what the sound was coming from. The investigation was completed fairly early due to the cold temperatures and the fog that would have to be driven through to get home.
Investigators: Kerry, Tim, Cody and Denise and Laura (Guest Investigators) Weather- Cold; Mid to lower 40's with a slight breeze and fog. Must point out, this is Halloween night. Gave Laura and Denise, a sensitive who has investigated with us before, a tour of the house. Started off with our prayer and in the kitchen as a group. Because we had a sufficient amount of people, we were able to cover much more area in a shorter amount of time. That being said, having a larger group may also be a detriment because there is more of a chance to hear movement and it could be from another person in another room. It's more difficult to isolate the sounds while you're there and on the evp recorders because of there being so many people. I know that having five people may not sound like a lot to other investigators, but when two of them aren't normally with the group, we have to try to learn their "ticks" in a hurry. For example, Tim is always putting his hands in his pockets and pulling them back out. This creates a sound against the denim that we've come to know is Tim and we don't mistake it for anything else. Not to pick on Tim, but we all have things we do that are part of us and when we got just as our group, we are used to each other. So, needless to say, some of the sounds from this investigation are hard to decide if they are paranormal or not. We still had a good time and were able to show someone else how an investigation goes, which she may have never had the opportunity to do. Overall, the night went well and we were able to see how others interpret the house. We also got to hear some new questions be asked that we may not have thought of before. We will definitely have others join us as guest investigators in the future.
The unique “Squirrel Cage” rotary jail in Council Bluffs served as the Pottawattamie County Jail from September 1885 until December 1969. In 1979 the Jail was sold to the Historical Society. The Historical Society of Pottawattamie County has continued to operate the Squirrel Cage ever since as one of the most unique museums in the country. During its 84 years of operation the jail would host a colorful mix of prisoners. Although the jail was designed to house a maximum of about 85 prisoners, the Squirrel Cage reached its probable maximum capacity in 1929 when 165 prisoners were reportedly incarcerated there. Four People died here: 3 guests of the county jail system and a police officer. One inmate died of a heart attack. One inmate committed suicide by hanging himself / herself in his / her cell. One death was caused by a dumb prisoner stunt. He died after falling from the third level of the jail cage, when he was trying to write his name on the ceiling. During a farmer's strike in 1932, 84 people were arrested. The police became heavily armed with machine guns, to assure there would be no forced jail breaks from the angry crowd. No officers were killed by the crowds, but one died in a stupid accident, when he accidentally shot himself with a gun. MANIFESTATIONS: Entity of a female spirit: (This could've been a woman who wanted to be seen as a little girl, or an actual little girl who did something horrendous in the 1900's!) A woman working on a project in the building was startled to see an entity of a sad little girl, dressed in gray, sitting in one of the cells, with unavailable access to the living. Visitors have felt an unseen presence tugging on their clothes, like a child would do. Feelings of depression and sadness radiate from the various cells. There are two candidates for what supervisor is haunting the jail, though it seems that both are in residence! The paranormal activity which happens outside the cell areas, in the hallways, especially in the 4th floor apartment, is thought to be caused by either or both of these restless entities. In the late 1950's, when Bill Foster became the new superintendent, he experienced enough paranormal activity to realize that the former occupants in the fourth floor apartment were still existing there, despite being dead! He chose to bunk on the second floor instead! The entity of the first superintendent, J.M. Carter is thought to some as being the restless, intense spirit who never gave up his position and hung around checking up on jailers and prisoners alike. The spirit of Otto Gudath, superintendent at the Squirrel Cage Jail from 1949 to 1958, was seen by witnesses on the 4th floor. He may also keep an eye on the living. Though deemed to be friendly and cordial, these presences are still supervising the museum staff, perhaps looking over the shoulders of the staff to see their progress in their activities in running the museum. Needless to say, they follow the living around the third and fourth floor keeping a close eye on visitors. Doors have opened and closed by themselves, as they go about their business.
Preliminary Investigation
Weather - It was a cool night with a breeze. The Investigation: Because of the jail being a museum, we had to investigate with some of the members of the museum staff, though they did stay in the downstairs office of the building. The entire jail is made up of metal and cement, so even the slightest sounds echoed. We did notice though, that the breeze didn't seem to make any creeking noises and all was quiet in there as long as we all stood still. The room upstairs was the apartment where the jailer and his family lived and is where we set up our equipment. There are many old books and jail documents up there that we were able to read and learn more of the history. We did walk around from floor to floor and placed evp recorders throughout the jail. We settled in on the top floor where our equipment was set up and began a question and answer session utilizing our thermal camera for the first time. We did get some strange readings, but couldn't tell if they were paranormal in nature or not. We spent about five hours in the building and at no time heard or felt anything paranormal. We packed up and went home to review our evp evidence but found nothing out of the ordinary. This was a preliminary investigation, so we were trying to get a feel for the building. We may decide to go back there at some point and if we do, we will add that investigation to our site.
This home was built in 1961 on land that was previously an old farm. There are still cement slabs from steps and shelters from the previous farm
surrounding the two blocks around this home. While digging in the front yard the owner found some cement with old rebar from a previous structure, but
could not tell what it was from. Since the family moved into the home they have had a sense of depression. There have been footsteps, heavy footsteps, at
all hours of the day and night. One of the daughters from the home has had the feeling of a man crawling into bed with her and lights turn on and off
mysteriously. There also on occasion have been attacks causing deep scratches and bleeding.
Preliminary Investigation
We were contacted via our website by Amy, the mother of the home. She said there were a lot of things going on in the house ever since they'd moved in some twenty five years ago. Now remarried, her husband Joe was also experiencing things as was the seventeen year old daughter, Sally. We knew this was a rush case as some of the experiences included body scratches that were deep enough to cause bleeding and there was a feeling of depression over the whole family. We arrived at the home and sat down with Amy and Sally to get the case specifics. Joe chose to stay in the basement and was reluctant to discuss things at first for some reason, though eventually he did come up and participate and turned out to have a lot of experiences himself. There were footsteps, heavy footsteps, at all hours of the day and night. Sally had the feeling of a man crawling into bed with her, and lights were turning on and off mysteriously. We said our prayer and began the investigation. We had the thermal in the living room and noticed that Sally's hands were a lot colder than the rest of her arms. She asked if it was weird that as we asked the questions, the answers came to her in her head. What we didn't know at the time was that there is a male voice that says "no". Sally also felt as though someone had been touching her hands which at this point were a full ten degrees cooler than her wrist and arms. We hear a man on the evp saying "I'm gonna touch you". We investigated in both bedrooms and the basement breifly. After a couple of hours, we felt we should go for the night and review our evidence. Two other evp's were captured and are on our evp evidence page.
This is our second investigation at the residence. The family decided they wanted us to come back and see if we could find out any further information and to see if we could get the visitors to leave as they were being very active lately. We began in the living room with everyone in a group. We asked various questions and the meters triggered throughout the night. We noted that Sally's older sister who was present for the investigation seemed to be feeling the same things that Sally was. That one of the spirits was a male named Michael and that he felt that Sally was his wife, but in a different time and that he was a soldier, which would explain the heavy footsteps. He was scared that Sally was going to forget about him and he was upset by that. He climbed into bed with her at night to be close to her. Cody and Sally and Sally's older sister sat in Sally's room and asked questions. Cody told Michael that he was welcome to stay in the home, but that he had to realize that Sally wasn't his wife and that climbing into bed with her was unacceptable. During this time, we also were using our new Flir thermal imaging camera and noticed that Sally's hands were again colder, though this time she didn't feel as though she had been touched. We have yet to find out who it is that scratches her mom. She has continued to get these scratches. The comforter on her bed is not filled with feathers, the dogs sleep at the foot of the bed, and the scratches are not within her reach so couldn't be from her during the night. That is one question that is left unanswered. Hopefully we'll be asked to come back and investigate further or at the very least, help them in performing a house cleansing to rid them of this Michael and the spirit that scratches in the night.
This home was built after a tornado swept through Omaha on Easter Day, 3:00 p.m., 1913. The home served as rectory, parish house and church offices. It was
even told that this home served as a morgue and viewing area for the church. THe home currently is converted into apartments. Tenants that live there say
that spirits help them off with their coats and they have been touched and shoved. On one occasion a large dining room table even moved.
Preliminary Investigation
We began our night as we have so many times before. We met the residents, took a tour and said our opening prayer. We began as a group in the living room. Marcus, a close friend of the resident stayed with our team and the resident and her boyfriend left for a movie. They have all experienced activity to some degree. Shoves, moving objects, voices and the animals (two dogs and three cats) have looked in various directions as if they see something or someone. We had our equipment set up with video recorders, thermals and our digital recorders in the bedroom and in the basement. The basement was at one time the body preparation area. The place the body was prepared for a funeral. Later, it was remodeled and became a tiny apartment where an eldery woman passed on. It is believed that she was the last resident of this area. We asked questions upstairs, taking turns and hoping for answers. To our knowledge at the time, we weren't getting any. We split up and Tim, Cody, Marcus and Laura headed to the basement for some Q & A. We took turns asking questions and upon listening to our evp recorders, we have one very clear EVP of our team stating we were going to go back upstairs and then there is a voice. The voice of an elderly woman and she is saying "don't go". Is she trapped in the house? After midnight, we packed up and prepared to review our evidence.
This is our second investigation at the old mortuary which has been converted to apartments. After hearing the elderly woman's voice on EVP, Cody was determined to talk to her again and spent a considerable amount of time talking to her. We did see a shadow from the wireless camera, which was set up in the basement. The team was very excited until we realized that the shadow was from Cody and Marcus standing in a room with the light behind them. Due to our scientific nature, we took the time to evaluate and re-evaluate the shadow and were able to determine that it was not paranormal. This is how we work. Time was spent in Ayn's room by Cody, Marcus, and Ayn after sounds were heard coming from that area of the residence. The meter triggered appropriately as questions were asked, but again, is this paranormal or just luck? What we do know is that the paranormal world is out there and spirits do communicate with us. We will continue to use our equipment and our senses to try to communicate and to find the truth.
